THE ISLAND OF LESVOS
PRACTICAL INFO | ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BIRDS BAY & LESVOS
The island of Lesvos
The lush, green island of Lesvos, or Mytilini as it is also known, is like no other Greek island and perhaps no other place in the world. The island was named after the mythical legend Lesvos, who came over from Lapithes, Thessaly and married a daughter of the settler King Makara in Mithymna. It is the third largest of the islands in Greece after Crete and Evia. Virtually unaffected by the mass tourism that most Greek islands experience, Lesvos is the perfect place to visit for people who want to experience splendor of Greece.
For the Greek Island traveler who is worried about not having enough to do, Lesvos is the island of plenty – a destination with -award-winning beaches, traditional villages, more varieties of birds and wildflowers than anywhere in Europe, pine forests, medieval castles, museums, scenic harbors with cafes and inexpensive restaurants, and some of the warmest, island people in all of Greece. Major natural attractions include a inique – petrified forest, and the natural hot springs – natural bathing inducing spas dotted around Lesvos.

Where is Birds Bay
Birds Bay is located in a really strategic point, halfway point to major sights, – and one of the island’s most magical coastlines. Birds Bay is considered to be Lesvos’s best kept secret! It’s situated in the ancient bay of Petra in the ancient Mithymna (Molyvos) region. The property is five minutes away from the village of Petra, a little harbour village where you’ll find traditional taverns, restaurants and small typical shops. Not active enough? Picturesque Molyvos is a twelve minute car ride away, a slightly bigger village, with a range of historic sightseeing spots, walks, boutiques and nightlife.
The capital of Lesvos: Mytilene, is about a one hour away drive from the property. Eressos – the birthplace of Sapphos is also an hour’s drive away. Visit traditional cheesemaking villages, women’s co-operatives or drive to pristine isolated beaches and natural bathing springs. One more (of the many) incredible sights is the Petrified Forest – a unique natural monument – is also just an hour away.
